Barrett's esophagus cannot be prevented in all cases. To help reduce the risk for developing the condition, patients who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) should avoid smoking; should use alcohol only in moderation; and should maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, and take all medication as directed by a physician.
