Prevention of Barrett's Esophagus

Barrett's esophagus cannot be prevented in all cases. To help reduce the risk for developing the condition, patients who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) should avoid smoking; should use alcohol only in moderation; and should maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, and take all medication as directed by a physician.

In addition, patients who experience chronic heartburn should have an upper GI endoscopy at the age of 40.
