Should I have TURP ?I m 59 I years old and due to have TURP on the 1st of Dec. I am already regretting aggreing to this treatment , quite frankly the thought of retrograde ejaculation is puting me off, Ok I know I do have an enlarged prostate had all the tests but the only "treatment" I have tried is a 3 month course of HYTRIN prescribed by my Doctor. He referred me to an eminent Urologist who appears to be well respected. however My "Symtoms" do not seem to me to be as severe as other people who have had TURP. I never get up in the night to urinate don't have blood in may urine no pain when passing water no kidney stones I do however have a reduced flow rate and had 1 incident after spending approximately 12 hours drinking alcohol at a family wedding. I found it very difficult to urinate and in fact had to stay up all night to empty my bladder in very small amounts, this happened about 5 months ago and has not been repeated. and I have since found out that "Beer" aggrevate's the prostate. It was quite painfull and the Urologist reckons I was lucky and next time will probably have a total shutdown and not be able to pass water at all . He also reckons it's too late to try Saw Palmetto or other Herbal remedies and has not suggested any other treatment and strongly advises TURP. So guys any advice?
Re: Should I have TURP ?As you probably have seen by my recent posts, I had laser surgery a few weeks ago and posted most of the details for others to read. If I were you, I think at this stage, with all your concerns, you should get another opinion before you commit to the surgery. What can it hurt? I myself went through years of Flomax and recently other drugs to try to improve the BPH. Eventually, it got so bad my own urologist said I was out of options drug-wise. So, I know it's a case-by-case thing, but you need to have a doctor who is confident that you are ready for this surgery, so you feel 100% about it. I will keep posting to update my progress which is pretty good for how long it's been since the procedure. Hope this helps you out.

Firstly, many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. And yes it has helped. As you obviously guessed I was not happy with my Urologists advice so have been back to see my Doctor and he advised .... to wait a couple of months then see another Urologist. I feel much happier, not just because I have cancelled the procedure, because I now realise that eventually Turp or similar will be inevitable, but now at least I can prepare myself and hopefully look at the plus side ie less trips to the bathroom. Please keep posting your recovery, and what all us guys really want to know is ofcourse What difference does retrograde ejaculation make. Good luck for the future.
Re: Should I have TURP ?OK>regarding the retrograde ejaculation....as I have posted some time ago, my doctor told me I would experience that after the surgery. He told me most guys get used to it and that it is not unhealthy. When he got in there with a laser, he was conservative with the areas that were overgrown, so rather than hog out those areas to the max, he did just what I was hoping he would do. He hit it perfectly and I have never had retrograde since. Now, having said that, there is a tradeoff. He told me that I might have to have the procedure done again "later on". So, it's not a permanent "forever" thing by any means. You can discuss this with your doctor before the surgery. I'm happy you have a new urologist. That's great. Myself, I haven't noticed any "decreased" feelings as far as climax goes, but I have heard this from a lot of others. It's a trade off in so many ways. You have to balance this with being able to have a more normal life in terms of urinating every two seconds. That drove me nuts and ruined everything from car rides to vacations to plane trips, etc. So, that's it. Remember, every doc is different in some way and every person is different, so results can vary. Good luck.
Re: Should I have TURP ?I had a laser TURP in mid-October. It was a "lisa" laser procedure, which promised to have few risks, and promised a good outcome. My symptoms at the time of surgery were worse than yours, but I was able to live with them. My major motivation for the surgery was to get rid of the two drugs I was on for the condition as well as lower the risk of ending up in the emergency room getting a catheter because of blockage.
The surgery was supposedly a "success" in terms of the procedure, but, I cannot pass urine, am self cathetering every 6 hours, have been in the emergency room 3 times in the past 3 weeks, and am concerned if I will get back to where I was before the surgery. My urologist tells me my experience is very unusual, but - here I am. I suggest you get a sense of the downsides of the procedure before you lay down on the table. If I knew before the surgery what I know now, I would have run away as fast as I could. Good luck with your decision....
Re: Should I have TURP ?I'm sorry to hear that your surgery is not going well for you. As you know, it's up to each doctor to explain the risks of any surgery beforehand, and mine was careful to do so. I wasn't thrilled about it but I really didn't have any choice. The drugs weren't working and I was on the verge of a bladder/kidney infection because I couldn't pass urine, so......my doc said there was really only one choice at that point.
I'm curious to know what your doctor is saying now that you are having these problems. Something is not right and I'm not sure what that might be, but now it's up to him to correct it and help you get over what you are going through. What is the plan now? At three weeks post op you should be peeing fine and maybe just a little pain left over from when you had the catheter. But that's about it. Wishing you well.
Re: Should I have TURP ?Just a thought. I absolutely agree that your first course is to ask your doctor. But, I've been surfing the net because I'm not sure how my own RF Prostiva is going to turn out. You might ask your doctor if there might be any bladder problems. If so, I found 3 medicines medicines: Bethanechol, Urecholine and Duvoid on the web that might possibly help. And, there's also neural stimulation (e.g. Interstim System). And, there are natural methods.
I'm not a doctor, and have no medical training at all, so take this for what it's worth (at least the advice is free). But, if my own situation gets desperate, I'm going to ask my urologist about these things. So, let me know if you find out anything. Anyone else please feel free to comment (for example: total BS, unrealistic, maybe, etc.). You may help me to eliminate things that I was going to ask my own doctor about.
