Ulcerative colitis cannot be prevented, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate symptoms. Dietary changes, including avoiding certain foods (e.g., dairy products, cabbage, broccoli, beans, spicy foods) and increasing dietary fiber, may help in some cases.
