Colorectal Cancer

My friend had surgery for colon cancer Nov. 29. 12 of 15 lymph nodes were also affected. Since then he has been having problems with diarrhea and constipation as well as pain. He isn't sleeping well and is up nights on the toilet. He began chemo and radiation over three weeks ago. His doctor tells him it's a problem with the spasmodic or spasmatic (sp?) muscle and that they may have to go back in to correct the problem. They're talking about nerve clipping. Is this a common side effect and solution? I've been unable to find info on it anywhere.
