colon resection scheduled for November 2008I have been told by my surgeon that I need to have a resection on my colon. I have read articles, spoke to the Doctor briefly and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the recovery period is like. I am concerned that I will not be able to gain weight. I have lost alot of weight since my last episode and I canot seem to put any weight on. I am currently at 111. My normal weight has been 122.
I am 57 and one of my other concerns is if the bowels function normal again post op. I would like reassurance from someone who has had this surgery that I can gain weight again and have normal bowel functions. I have a good Doctor who I will be asking questions to this week and I was wondering if there are some particular important questions that would be important to ask. I appreciate any and all posts. Re: colon resection scheduled for November 2008Hi Debbie,
I have been told that I need to see a surgeon about having the same operation you have had. After having a Virtual Colonoscopy (after having many incomplete colonoscopies), they found multiple pockets in the sigmoid colon that were filled with feces (sounds gross to me). I see you had the same surgeon in November, 2008. Hope you are doing fine and would love to hear from you about your surgery. I need to know what to expect during and after the surgery. I have had repeated attacks of Diverticulitis for the past two years and on Flagyl and Cipro too often - then Diflucan due to yeast caused by the strong antibiotics. I feel as though I'm on a merry-go-round getting nowhere. I also have chronic pancreatitis and have had one surgery in 1986 for pseudocyst on tail of pancreas and a partial pancreatectomy in 2001 due to a rare benign tumor on the pancreas tail. Also, had invasive ductal breast cancer - stage II with a mastectomy in 2006 so surgery is not new for me but I wish I didn't have to have this done. Looking forward to hearing from you. Carole
