Prognosis

Esophagitis usually responds well to treatment and the prognosis (i.e., expected outcome) is good in most cases. Prompt diagnosis and treatment improves the prognosis.
Perforation of the esophagus can cause severe bleeding and death. Esophagitis caused by a condition called Barrett's esophagus increases the risk for esophageal cancer.
