There is hopeIn 1997 I had surgery for stomach cancer. Stomach, spleen, and part of esphogus removed. J tube placed. I had j tube in for two months then removed. The Onc told me that chemo would just make me sick before I died. I have lost 160 lbs and have many eating issues. I have to sleep sitting up. So there is hope for all out there. If anyone has any questions feel to ask.

Re: There is hopeCongratulations Kris! Its so good to hear that someone has survived stomach cancer for as long as you have. My Mom went through surgery but they did not do anything once they got in there except remove her gallbladder. I think they thought the hole in her stomach was too big to be repaired or something. Anyway they proceeded with chemo and told her she is in remission. Which obviously sh has been because she has gained alot of weight since her chemo treatments and is getting around alot better now that she is home. Damn hospital they were horrible at rehabilitating her. Thankfully she is home where she got excellent rehabilitation from me. The physical therapist at the hospital told me she may never walk again. That was b.s.!!! Anyway. Im a firm believer in researching everything you can about cancer and dont believe what the hospital tells you about recovery. They gave me no hope and my Mother is doing great. I think they sent her home to die. Boy have we proved them wrong!!!!
Re: There is hopeI love hearing about hope! My mom was diagnosed one month ago with gastric cancer. She only had heartburn, but after having bone pain and an insurance company blood test come back with high alkaline phosphatate, she asked her dr. for a bone scan. She had mestatic bone cancer and after a series of tests, determined the primary site to be gastric cancer. She has 2 impending fractures in her thigh and pelvis and can no longer walk. The orthopedic oncologist can't do surgery on her bones because they are too weak and the recovery time is too long. The gastric oncologist says that since the cancer has metastisized they can't to stomach surgery. She had her first bout with chemo one week ago and the alkaline phosphate in her blood went down from 1000 to 300. We hope and pray that this is just a beginning of good things to come for her healing. I was frustrated with her oncologist when I asked him about nutrition. He told her to eat whatever she wants. Of course, now, after her first chemo, she hardly eats anything. Luckily, she is about 60 lbs. overweight, but at the rate she is eating, she will lose fast. He has not even prescribed vitamins! Does anyone have any nutritional advice for gastric cancer patients?
