I was diagnosed with stage 3 gastric cancer Feb. 29th and had a subtotal gastrectomy March 10. The tumor was at the bottom of the stomach blocking the exit, laying against the pancreas so they scraped some of that off, as well as removing nearby lymphnodes. We had some complications with infection and eroding of internal sutures which caused some bile to leak out, so they needed to go back in and clean/fix this on the 20th. 2 months later, I am STILL not recovered from the second surgery and not eating/drinking anything yet (receiving TPN nutrition as well) am getting very frustrated with this terriby slow process as well. There was a point where they thought I was healed and let me eat, but my drain output started to turn green again (indicating bile) and made me stop eating. Fortunately, the week I WAS eating, I had no problems (other than drain color) and my previous symptoms did not return. I guess that means that the gastrectomy was sucessful (?). My surgeon told me that any internal healing takes much longer than we expect because of the "wet" enviornment so I just need to be more patient. It's getting very hard to remain positive when it seems that no progress is being made.

I too, was concerned about having to delay chemo/radiation. We are waiting for me to heal from the surgery before starting chemo treatment. My oncologist said that delaying treatment a few weeks/months will not make much difference.

Everything that I hear, anything other than stage 4 gastric caner has a good prognosis. I'm sure your husband will be fine and he'll recover eventually. I've heard many stories of other gastric cancer patients who have survived so I never really took my diagnosis as a death sentence. My children's preschool administrator was diagnosed with stomach cancer early last year and it had spread to many more organs and she had MAJOR surgery (beyond gastrectomy) and I met her middle of last year and she was working full-time and I had no clue she was sick. She looked perfectly healthy and she recovered completely. She says she's doing great now and hasn't had any problems. I realize it will be a very tough fight.

I feel for you because I know that my illness has been harder on my husband than it is for me, even though I'm the one with the cancer. The emotional stress he bears is harder because he sees me suffering and can't do anything. Not to mention, he has to bear the responsibility of holding down the fort and taking care of 2 toddlers AND me! And I have to say that the times I break down are when I see how hard all of this is for him. You have to be strong for your husband, so he can be strong...
