The prognosis (expected outcome) for patients who have pancreatitis depends on the age and overall health of the patient, and the severity of the condition. In mild cases, the prognosis is good.

Complications, such as severe tissue damage, infection, organ failure, diabetes, and shock, often result in a poor prognosis.
